The brief: to build and create an off grid nano brewery with bar. The Dark Farm beer garden will be fully self-sufficient, growing grain, hops and additions; and generate power for a brewery.
A Utopian beer ecosystem!
We are always trying to be as green as possible at Dark Farm. But can we take it one step further and merge (even more so) our two loves: beer and our farm?
We’ve been looking to expand our hops using hydroponics for some time and have tested different techniques over the past few years. But it’s time to take it to a new level. The year 2020 is the year we’re really going to go for it.
Beer comes full circle
Whilst discussing this over a few pints – the best ideas are birthed from beer! – we wondered how we can make this even more fun. What new elements can we bring to the farm? A few pints later, we asked ourselves whether it’s possible to build a beer making ecosystem which will not only grow all we need, but act as a hub to brew with friends, enjoy a pint and learn a thing or two. ‘Yes’ is the answer! And so project Beer Garden was born.
We want to hear from you!
During this project we will be learning a lot of new tricks and will be asking a lot of questions, some of which we hope you can help with. We’ll be posting our findings here on our site and social media. Please feel free to reply and comment with ideas you may have that could help. After all a Utopian society is a community working together …and I’m sure enjoying a beer to two.
Initial considerations:
- Environment, habitat and construction
- How much grain is needed?
- How to malt and do special grain?
- Yeast cultivation
- Additional ingredients
- Water supply
- Hops hydroponics
- Nano brewery equipment
- Fermentation control
- Storage and dispensing
- Power
- Extras
- Waste and recycling
Please feel free to get in touch with any ideas or comments for us. However crazy they may be 🙂
